DIY Montessori Sensorial Materials

Montessori Sensorial materials can get quite expensive. Here are some ways to DIY some of the most popular materials:

Texture Matching

Use balloons and common kitchen ingredients to make this texture matching work!

Stereognostic Bag

Use a simple drawstring bag and fill it with objects that are all related in some way — like kitchen utensils. Your child will have to reach into the bag without looking and name what he’s pulling out, then check to see if he’s correct!

Rough & Smooth Boards

Use some wood or cardboard along with different grits of sandpaper to create this classic Montessori material!

Color Tablets

Here’s a free DIY — just take a visit to your local hardware store and head straight for the paint samples! Collect two of each color for Color Boxes 1 & 2. For Color Box 3, collect 7 different shades of the same color to grade from darkest to lightest.

Smelling Jars

Grab some spice jars, cotton balls, and essential oils or food extracts to create this sensory delight!

Pink Tower & Brown Stair

If you’re super handy, you can even make your own Pink Tower and Brown Stair using these instructions!

Red Rods

If you’re not super handy but still want to create a less expensive version of the red rods, cut them from cardboard!
