Montessori Grace & Courtesy for Toddlers

Montessori Grace & Courtesy lessons are part of the Practical Life curriculum to cultivate respect for the environment and respect for others. Even toddlers, our youngest learners, can participate in Grace & Courtesy lessons! Many of these lessons can be presented at Circle Time using role playing techniques with co-teachers or an older toddler. Here are some Grace & Courtesy lesson presentations for a Montessori toddler environment:

Carrying a Work Tray

Pick up a tray with both hands and carefully carry it over to a table, then carry it back to the shelf.

Walking Around a Rug

Walk over to a work rug spread out on the floor. Visibly notice it, then stop and walk around the rug before continuing on your way.

Gentle Hands

“This is how we touch our friends.” Gently stroke someone nearby on the arm. “Gentle hands.”

Observation Hands

“This is how we watch our friends do work.” Stand beside someone doing work and clasp your hands behind your back. “These are my observation hands,” or “These are my watching hands.”

The Waiting Hand

“This is how I tell the teacher that I’m waiting to talk to her.” Walk up to another teacher and gently place your hand on her shoulder or arm. Leave it there and have the other teacher cover your hand with hers. “This is my waiting hand.” Then have the teacher turn to you, thank you for waiting, and ask what you’d like to say.
