An all-time favorite toddler activity is putting objects into holes. In the Montessori world, we call this “posting.” You’ve probably observed this inclination in your toddler in some ways that probably aren’t the safest — like with electrical outlets! So how can you follow the child to provide for this need in a safer way?
This peg pop-up toy was a favorite with my girls for a LONG time! This is also a good one that can be repeated over and over again without the adult needing to intervene, because the pegs don’t go all the way in.
Something to consider when you’re putting together a posting work is to create a little resistance so your child has to physically push the object through the hole in order for it to go in. For example, if you try using a pom-pom that’s slightly larger than the hole you cut in the lid of the formula can, he would have to push it through. This is more satisfying for toddlers than simply dropping a pom-pom into a large hole.
Other fun posting ideas (as your toddler’s fine motor skills progress):
- popsicle molds
- ping-pong balls in a large water jug
- bells in a coffee creamer jug — don’t forget that element of sound!
- drink stirrers in an upside down colander
- coins/buttons in a slot
