“Mom, I think I actually DO like reading.” Nora [Nora!] actually said those words the other day. Do you know how many baby steps it took us to get to that point?! If you’ve been here for a while, you’ve probably been seeing my posts about building confidence for my reluctant reader/writer for at least a year now. Just in this past week, I’ve found her reading signs and advertisements out loud, and actually choosing early readers to read ON HER OWN! These are my pink and blue series sentence strips — you can find them in my Etsy shop in print or cursive. 🔗
I was watching the girls playing together the other day when I started thinking about how long we’ve owned the toys they were using — and I was shocked to realize it had been about 4 years! Then I started thinking about all of the girls’ favorite open-ended toys. Most of them were originally purchased when the girls were 2/3 years old — and they’re now 5 and 7! We are still getting a lot of use out of them, so I thought I’d share 10 open-ended toys your kids will play with for years in case you’re looking for some good investments!
I don’t know why, but it had never occurred to me to use anything other than the number tiles with the hundred board until last week. Then we used Cheerios to celebrate the 100th day of school, and then rocks because Nora wanted to see if she had 100 rocks in her collection. It’s like a whole new world has opened up! Highly recommend exploring with your hundred board.
Lila is 7 today! Check my stories to go back in time with me... 😭
Words matter. Until recently (much more recently than I care to admit...) I thought of my daughters as “half-Asian” — a term that implies that the other “half” is white, which doesn’t need to be named. I’ve been thinking about that a lot in the time since I first realized it, wondering how to define them instead. But it’s not my identity to define. I think, instead, my role is to provide them with the language to describe themselves. Instead of half-Asian, I’ll provide “biracial,” “Korean,” “American,” “Korean-American,” “Lila,” “Nora.”
Twisted up arms filling their fruit bowls. 😍
