Raising Caterpillars to Butterflies — Free Printable Observation Journal!

We have raised caterpillars to butterflies for at least 3 springs now, and it never gets old! We began way back when the girls were toddlers as we did our first butterfly unit.

We ordered a butterfly kit our first time, then kept the butterfly house so each year we only have to order live caterpillars. [You could also just catch caterpillars outside, but I like that they come with food when I order them so I don’t have to forage for the right type of leaves.]

Lila has been filling out an observation journal about a plant her Kindergarten teacher is growing, so this year I made a similar one for her to do with our butterflies! Each page has a space for the date, an illustration, and lines for writing observations.

My daughter writes in her observation journal every time she notices a change in the caterpillars. And her observations are often quite amusing…

So much fun!
