Montessori Human Body Study: The Muscular System

We began our study of the human body on the outside and worked our way in — as most Montessori learning goes!  After learning all about The Outer Body and the skeletal system, we moved on in to look at the muscular system.

We used a simple Muscle Diagram found in a Google search along with our books (see below) for most of our study.

First we examined and named each of the muscles in the diagram.  Then we found each of those muscles on our own bodies.

We enjoyed exercising a bit with some movement cards from Every Star is Different’s My Body Activities for Tots & Preschoolers Printable Pack and seeing different ways our muscles could move.

We also enjoyed exploring our muscles through yoga.  The girls loved looking at the different poses in their yoga books (see below) and then copying them.

We rely heavily on wonderful children’s books for all of our themed studies, and here are the books we used to study the muscular system of the human body:

The Usborne Big Book of the Body

See Inside Your Body

The Usborne Complete Book of the Human Body

Muscles:  Our Muscular System, by Seymour Simon

I Am Yoga, by Susan Verde & Peter H. Reynolds

Children’s Book of Yoga:  Games & Exercises Mimic Plants & Animals & Objects, by Thia Luby

Stay tuned as we continue to dive deeper into our human body study!
