Have you heard of Trades of Hope? It’s an organization that helps employ and empower women all over the world (but especially in developing countries), and they create some beautiful products. I recently went to a Trades of Hope party, and I found some things that would be perfect for our World Peace Shelf!
I was immediately drawn to this World Bank (made by women in Bangladesh), and it led me to take this World Peace Shelf one step further — we could show L how to be an active promoter of World Peace! I showed her how to put coins in the top of the bank, and she immediately ran to my purse and stole my wallet. Whenever she asks for money for her World Bank, we give her a few coins. What are we saving up for?
We told L that when her World Bank fills up with money, she can choose someone from around the world to donate it to. We turned on the computer and went to Kiva — where you can fund a loan to help a borrower go to school or start a business. When the loan is repaid, you can then lend that money to another borrower. We were looking to fund somebody from Bangladesh (since that’s where the World Bank was made), but that country wasn’t listed. Instead, we chose Guatemala. We looked at all of the pictures of borrowers, and L chose a group of women who are starting a jewelry-making business.
