L has mastered all of the beginning language matching activities [Nomenclature Basket, Object Matching, Object to Picture Matching, and Picture Matching], so it is time to move on to more abstract activities. I searched all over the internet for printable opposites cards, but I couldn’t find any that I loved. So I made my own!
The problem I had with the opposites cards I could find was that they often matched two different pictures instead of the same picture in different ways. That would be fine for an older child, but L is just two and a half. I made cards that have the same object in opposite ways [for example, a pot with a lid on matches with the same pot with the lid off].
After L matches all of the cards, we go back and talk about each of the pairs and how they are different. This builds language skills and helps the child make connections that are a bit more abstract. I made five different pairs of opposites for this activity — when L has mastered them, I’ll have to add some more!

For those who don’t have a laminator, check with your public library or local print shop. Laminating can be done relatively easily and inexpensively.
