Food Prep for Toddlers — Hard Boiled Eggs

After Easter, we had tons of dyed hard boiled eggs to eat.  L wasn’t too fond of them, so I set up a food prep work for her to encourage her to keep tasting them.

First I showed her how to peel the egg.  This requires concentration and fine motor control.  Our dog thought she might want some help…

When she finished peeling the egg, she dumped the eggshells into the trashcan.

L’s favorite part was slicing the egg.  It took quite a bit of pressure for her to push the slicer down all the way!

Finally, L got to taste the egg.  She still didn’t really like it, but she at least tasted it each time she completed the work.  Then she was allowed to offer it to Mommy and Daddy for a snack — in the classroom this is done with the other children as a lesson in grace and courtesy.

  1. I love this! Our baby is just about to be 6 months old and I am constantly trying to get him to do things on his own. If his toys are a few feet away and he wants them, I will encourage him to get them himself. He can’t crawl but he can roll to them. He’s still so young but I love seeing him excited when he finally does something himself.

  2. Great idea!! I’m utilizing many of your ideas with my grandson.

  3. I love how concentrated she seems while peelingl the egg! So cute! I love the idea to make it not only a snack, but also an activity! My son, Samuel, loves to peel the banana! It’s so cute!
